Nutrition Pilot Program
HPSD Receiving Additional $250,000 to Continue Nutrition Program

High Prairie School Division is very pleased that the Alberta Government has continued to fund the school nutrition project. The Government of Alberta made an announcement on April 5th on its plan to expand the program to all school jurisdictions in the province. Our division was 1 of 14 jurisdictions that piloted the project this school year and it has been very well-received by our schools and students. École Routhier School and High Prairie Elementary School partnered with local grocers, to provide lunches for over 200 students per day and another 100+ snacks per day. Freson Bros. in High Prairie and New Horizon Co-op in Falher have been instrumental in this program’s success. Thank you to both of our local grocers and to the Government of Alberta for making this nutrition project a reality. We look forward to continuing with the nutrition pilot project in our division.

Consolidated NLC Campus in High Prairie

High Prairie School Division is thrilled to hear that the Government of Alberta is investing $21.6 million over the next four years for Northern Lakes College to design and consolidate their High Prairie campuses. The new facility will accommodate 250 students, address future growth plans, meet employment demands in the region, and increase campus energy efficiency.

The Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, March 15th for their regularly scheduled board meeting. Trustees reviewed Board Policies 8, 9, and 10. Trustees had reviewed policies from other school jurisdictions to ensure that we were meeting and exceeding the current standard by Alberta school boards.

Kinuso School Receives $40,000 for Playground

The Kinuso Playschool Society in partnership with Kinuso School received $40,162 towards their new playground equipment. The monies come from the Community Facility Enhancement Program which is administered by Alberta Culture and Tourism and aims to foster healthy, vibrant communities across Alberta.

The Board of Trustees approved the 2017-18 school calendar as presented at their regular board meeting on Wednesday, March 15th. The calendar was developed by the administrative team consisting of Principals and Vice Principals with respect to the valued input from the annual calendar survey and the coterminous school jurisdictions with which we have shared transportation services.

Junior ATB Program at High Prairie Elementary

ATB Financial and High Prairie Elementary have introduced their Junior ATB Program to the students of HPE. “Since 2009, the Junior ATB Program has taught financial knowledge and life skills to elementary students within the walls of their own schools. The Junior ATB Branch introduces students to the basics of money management and financial literacy as they create their specific savings plan and goals.

E.W. Pratt Salutes First ABSA Certified 4th Class Power Engineering Graduate Eric Larson

E.W. Pratt and High Prairie School Division are pleased to announce Eric Larson as the first graduate from that school in the 4th Class Power Engineering Program with his ABSA (Alberta Boilers Safety Association) Certification. Eric’s father is also a Power Engineer at Plain’s Midstream east of High Prairie. The cost to take the program outside of high school can range between $5,000 to $6,000. While in school, Eric was able to take this program at no cost. Doing so, he earned his credits and is now recently graduated with his ticket and is actively seeking employment.

High Prairie School Division is pleased to announce Tahza Cardinal as a new Success Coach working in Kinuso School. Tahza will be working with Joyce Hunt, another Success Coach at Kinuso School. In addition to serving the hamlet of Kinuso, the school serves Driftpile Cree Nation, Swan River First Nation, Faust, and the County of Big Lakes.

Robert (Bob) Owens, Principal for Georges P. Vanier School in Donnelly, has been nominated as the High Prairie School Division candidate for the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Bob has been an educator with High Prairie School Division since 1980. He is a graduate of our division and has selflessly given of himself to improve the educational environment and increase the learning opportunities of not only his students but also of his colleagues. His exemplary work has impacted and continues to impact the lives of countless generations of students through his long and successful career at our division.

Heather Caudron Nominated for Canada’s Outstanding Principal Award

Heather Caudron, Principal of Joussard School, was nominated by High Prairie School Division for the 2017 Canada’s Outstanding Principal award. Canada’s Outstanding Principals recognizes outstanding contributions of principals in publicly funded schools. It honours principals from every province and territory in Canada who demonstrate innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and who have done something truly remarkable in public education. Heather, a 35 year veteran with HPSD, is a staff member who exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding principal and received a standing ovation by her colleagues upon announcement of her nomination. As a requirement of the nomination, students and staff from Heather’s school wrote letters to voice their support. A full copy of Heather’s nomination and letter of support from Superintendent Laura Poloz is attached to this media release.

The HPSD Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, December 21st for their regular board meeting. The Board discussed and responded to the ASBA Strategic Plan Survey. Trustees were in favour of many strategic priorities and key results. The Board felt that ASBA should adhere to their mandate and that they must also be a stronger voice in the province regarding key issues such as the curriculum change and the carbon tax.

Accountability Pillar Overview Results for HPSD

The Alberta Government released the 2015-16 Provincial Achievement Test results and the 2015-16 Diploma Exam results on Friday, October 7th and High Prairie School Division is pleased with the positive results from across the Division. These standardized tests are one way of enabling Alberta Education, as well as parents, teachers, and school boards, to assess student achievement and to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Joussard, Alberta – The new school in Joussard held its Grand Opening on Friday, September 16th to an audience of local dignitaries, government officials, and neighbouring school jurisdiction trustees and superintendents. The ceremony included speeches from Board Chair Tammy Henkel and Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee. Minister Larivee also presented the school with a bronze plaque to commemorate its official opening.
