HPSD Board MeetingFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

High Prairie, Alberta – The Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, March 15th for their regularly scheduled board meeting. Trustees reviewed Board Policies 8, 9, and 10. Trustees had reviewed policies from other school jurisdictions to ensure that we were meeting and exceeding the current standard by Alberta school boards.

A discussion was held on the topic of transferring funds between the division and its schools electronically versus the current method of issuing a cheque. Trustees referenced their fiduciary responsibility and wanted to ensure that the same internal controls were in place for the electronic fund transfers. The motion was carried with the clause “...to a maximum of $5,000 per month per school with the same internal controls as a regular cheque run...”.

Board Policy 7, Board Operations, received first, second, third, and final reading. It is available now on the HPSD website under Quick Links, Board Policies.

The Board then received a delegation from the Transportation Department. Director Harry Davis presented the current status of the department with updates on the shop, driver, and administrative activities. Mr. Davis identified the departments work into alternatively fueled buses to address the divisions commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, the evacuation training and first aid training is complete and up-to-date for all drivers, and that the department is prepared to respond to calls for buses and drivers due to forest fires. The School Bus Roadeo is planned for May 2017 with further details to be released in the coming month.

The Board then received a delegation from the Success Coaches with Coordinator Delores Cox. The presentation from the team focused on the work they have done to date and their plan on addressing the 4 goals from the Board of Trustees. Those goals are community engagement, culturally responsive schooling, Indigenous curriculum infusion, and accountability and reporting. The extensive report from the Success Coaches will be posted on the HPSD website to provide an accurate report of their work to-date.

Trustees approved the 2017-18 School Calendar as presented. The calendar was developed by the Principals and Vice Principals of our division and was respective of the annual calendar survey which had over 860 responses. The calendar is on the HPSD website now.

The Board gave approval in principle to the RMS trip to Argentina in 2018 and approval in full to the EWP trip to Ottawa this month.

Trustees received the Superintendent’s Report, Trustee’s Report, Finance Report, and Transportation Report. At this time they were able to officially welcome aboard the new Finance Director, Jody Frowley.

Lastly, the Board reviewed the PSBC agenda package and information from ASBA.
