High Prairie, Alberta – The Alberta Government released the 2017-18 provincial achievement test results and the 2017-18 diploma exam results on Tuesday, October 17th. High Prairie School Division is pleased with the positive results from across the Division. These standardized tests are one way of enabling Alberta Education, as well as parents, teachers, and school boards, to assess student achievement and to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

HPSD was pleased to see continued successes in the Safe and Caring, School Improvement, and Transition Rate measures. We were especially pleased to receive an Excellent rating for our Program of Studies measure. Both Program of Studies and Parental Involvement exceeded the provincial averages for the past 3 years.

Our academic diploma exam results realized some significant leaps forward. Many core subjects had 5-10% increases in their averages. English Language Arts 30-2 has exceeded the provincial average for 3 consecutive years with ELA 30-1 seeing increases in both its acceptable and excellence standards. Biology 30, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30 diploma exam results were 6-10% higher than their previous averages. Math 30-1 and 30-2 also saw increases from their previous results. Social Studies 30-1 more than doubled the previous standard of excellence and has seen a 15% increase in their acceptable standard over the past 3 years. Our provincial achievement test (PAT) results showed an increase in a number of areas. Grade 6 PAT results showed continued growth over the past the 3 years in all core subjects with English Language Arts doubling their standard of excellence results. Our Grade 9 PAT results in Math and English have room for improvement to meet provincial averages however the 3-year average in Science 9 has shown a 10% increase over that period.

As with previous years’ results, the strengths and areas for improvement have fluctuated this year and are only one indication of student abilities. High Prairie School Division recognizes that there will always be room for growth; we will continue to focus on both literacy and numeracy as we move forward into the school year. We remain committed to improving student learning with a focus on improving academic success for all students and strengthening our relationships with all stakeholders in the Division.
