Regular Board Meeting SummaryThe HPSD Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, May 20 for their regularly scheduled board meeting. They accepted the consent agenda and moved into the remainder of the meeting.

The meeting began with a review of Board Policy 14 - School Closures and Policy 15 - Recruitment and Selection of Personnel. Policy 14 was reaffirmed and Policy 15 was reviewed with suggested amendments that will be prepared for the next board meeting.

The Board then discussed the Alberta School Boards Association Zone 1 Friends of Education nomination. Landon Fink of Kinuso School is the 2020 HPSD candidate for the prestigious award. The Edwin Parr award is given to a first-year teacher who goes above and beyond in the duties normally expected of a teacher.

Trustees discussed the Alberta government task force on student transportation. The Board was disappointed at the lack of rural representation on the task force. Trustees directed administration to send a letter on behalf of the board to the task force and respective ministers and MLAs. The letter will detail how decisions impacting rural school authorities must include rural representation, especially from northern Alberta.

The Board then discussed the Capital Maintenance and Renewal Stimulus program for schools. HPSD submitted several school-based projects that could be covered under the program.

Trustees then reviewed Board Policy 11 - Role of the Superintendent, Board Policy 12 - Appeals Regarding Student Matter and Appendix, and Board Policy 13 - Hearings on Teacher Transfers. Policy 11 received first reading. Policies 12 and 13 received first and second readings.

The Board received the Finance Report and went into closed for the remainder of the meeting.
