Educational Assistant Coaches Hired for Innovative Training Program

Board Approves 2024-25 School Calendar

The 2024-25 school year calendar was approved at the regular board meeting yesterday, February 20. The 2024-25 school calendar survey received 844 responses. Superintendents from Northland School Division and Holy Family Catholic Regional Division met with HPSD Superintendent Marran to discuss common dates and holidays to reduce the number of days in the upcoming school year when school buses are operating for only one school division. The proposed calendar was prepared by a committee consisting of the Superintendent, the Director of Communications, administrators, teachers, and support staff representing all grade levels and wards. High Prairie School Division is pleased to announce that Susan LeBlanc-Ward has been appointed as Principal of C.J. Schurter School for the upcoming school year. She will be assuming the role from Principal Marlee Adams, who has accepted a position at Northern Lakes College. Susan has been the Principal of Kinuso School since the Fall of 2022. She has a Bachelor of Education from the Nova Scotia Teachers College and has been an educator for 26 years, with ten years of experience as an administrator.

Remembrance Day 2023

Change to Busing in 2023-24 School Year

The Board of Trustees has made a change to busing in the upcoming school year. Starting in September 2023, busing services will be offered at no cost for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 who live 1 km or greater from their designated school and for students in Grades 7 to 12 who live 2 km or greater from their designated school. This decision will provide more transportation services to students as the current threshold for eligible riders is 2.4 km from their designated school for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Grade 8 Students Travel to Camp Yowachas

The annual Prairie River Junior High School grade eight trip to Camp Yowachas was another absolute success. Students spent three days at the outdoor education camp near Fallis, Alberta, on the north shore of Wabamun Lake. They participated in adventurous outdoor activities that built courage, positive self-esteem, and teamwork. These included canoeing, rock climbing, and playing 'Capture the Flag' in the woods.

HPSD Honours Murdered and Missing Indigenous People (MMIP)

National MMIP Awareness Day, also known as Red Dress Day, was honoured on Friday, May 5. Beginning as a grassroots movement called the REDdress project, this day brings awareness to the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous people across Canada. It is associated with empty red dresses to evoke the missing women who should be wearing them. We now also see images of a red hand over the mouth representing all of the missing sisters whose voices will not be heard.

Grade Nine Student Receives Provincial Award

We are so proud of grade nine student Olianna Stone, from Prairie River Junior High School, for being chosen to receive the ASBA (Alberta School Boards Association) Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award. This award is presented to students with exemplary leadership, courage, and commitment to their cultures and educational paths. Olianna was one of 12 students who were selected from among 224 nominees.

Robotics Teams Qualify for Provincials in Edmonton

On Friday, April 21, two teams from Georges P. Vanier School competed in the Regional Skills Competition at Northwestern Polytechnic in Fairview in the Robotics category. This year, the teams had to code robots to play hockey and score goals on the other team.

Former HPSD Student Delivers Powerful Message

Linsay Willier-Kendall, a former High Prairie School Division student, visited Prairie River Junior High School on Monday, March 13. Linsay is from Sucker Creek First Nation, on Treaty 8 territory. She was a finalist on Canada's Next Top Model in 2009 and went on to compete in Miss Universe Canada, winning the People's Choice Award. Linsay is an actor, mother of a blended family, and a powerful motivational speaker.

Eleven-year-old student Isabella Kulak, from Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan, inspired a global movement after being told by an educational assistant on her school’s “formal day” that her handmade ribbon skirt didn’t even match her shirt and that she should wear something more like the other kids.

The event also provides an opportunity to share stories, learn more about diversity, and promote cultural pride. Junior PD Day at Lakeside Outreach School

At Lakeside Outreach School, students independently work through courses on and off campus at their own pace. Last year the school created a new initiative called Junior PD Days. These in-person learning experiences allow students to connect with their teachers in new ways, network with other students, and learn from experts within the local community while earning Career and Technology Studies (CTS) credits outside of core courses.
