Student Learning Options

The safety and well-being of students, their families, and HPSD staff come first. Families may choose to have their children remain at home due to COVID concerns while others will return to in-person classes with cohorts and significant health and safety measures. While we feel the best option for student learning is with in-person classes, we know that there are students and parents who would like to know what alternatives are available. Students who do not attend in-person classes can do any of the following:

HPSD will ensure continuity of learning through rich, meaningful, and appropriate learning experiences that are responsive to the needs of our learners and our communities across the division. Flexible options are available to families as they analyze the information and determine which option is best for their child at a certain time of year.

All students registered with HPSD will be provided with technology, as needed, for their programming. This will also allow for the flexibility needed as circumstances change and students learn from home, or return to school, or are home for short periods of isolation.

HPSD At-Home Learning - additional details

Teaching will focus on the core subject areas, with modified complementary course opportunities. Teachers will use the internet to complement HPSD At-Home Learning (AHL) but it is not a requirement. Coursework can be developed and provided to students using traditional methods (paper copies, USBs, etc.). HPSD will coordinate with the family to support the students with an appropriate technology and to access technical support at home.

Students are required to meet all the outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study.

At-Home Learning Application

At-Home Learning students will remain enrolled at the school where they are registered for 2020-21. Their teacher may not be a staff member at that school. Lastly, students in the HPSD At-Home Learning class may be from more than one HPSD school.

For At-Home Learners, the information form must be completed and sent to To facilitate planning for At-Home Learners, all registrations should be received prior to August 26th.

Information forms received after August 26th may not be able to receive At-Home Learning until the next quarter.
