Regular Board Meeting SummaryFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

High Prairie, Alberta – The High Prairie School Division Board of met on Wednesday, March 18 for their regularly scheduled meeting. Trustees approved the consent agenda and proceeded with the rest of the meeting.

Trustees began by discussing the Joussard and Kinuso Playschool integration into HPSD kindergarten program. The initial discussion began when the person running the current program was considering retiring. HPSD began the process of looking into how they could incorporate the program into current offerings to ensure continuity of services to children. The person running the current program has elected to not retire this year. As there will be no change in services, HPSD will not be pursuing this matter further.

The Board reviewed Administrative Procedure 110 – School Councils as presented by administration.

The Board of Trustees then had a discussion around the COVID-19 situation. Administration gave an update on work that is being done by division staff. Updates are being posted on our website hpsd.ca/covid19. Teachers are reaching out to students and their families to assess the current technology level in each household. Many teachers have also been using their Google classrooms and other online resources to continue providing content delivery. HPSD is working closely with our partners at Alberta Education and the other school divisions within Zone 1 to ensure equity and sustainability for our learners. Following our regularly scheduled spring break, additional information on content delivery will be sent home to families. Staff who have needed to take time off this week, whether to self-isolate, look after children, or for other reasons, are doing so with no need to use any medical/personal/vacation days. Staff working in schools are providing a continuity of education but as this situation is very fluid, details may change as this continues to evolve.

A delegation consisting of Assistant Superintendent Treva Emter and Curriculum Lead Julia Drefs was then received. They provided a synopsis on the professional development that has been undertaken this year which has had a strong focus on data.

Trustees then reviewed Board Policy 10 – Board Delegation of Authority.

The Board approved the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school year calendars.

The Board defeated a motion to sponsor the Peace Regional Science Fair given the current situation in the province. Trustees asked for a letter to be submitted to the organizer that they would be open to revisiting this opportunity should the Peace Regional Science Fair be possible at a later date.

Board Policy 9 – Policy Making received third and final reading.

The Board Trustees cancelled the Prairie River Junior High national field trip to Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec due to cancellation of classes by the provincial Chief Medical Officer, both in Alberta and Quebec, and that travel poses a risk to the health, safety, and well-being of staff and students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Board received the Finance Report and an update on the new funding model for the upcoming school year and then moved into closed for the remainder of the meeting.
