High Prairie, Alberta – The HPSD Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, December 18 for their regularly scheduled meeting. Trustees discussed business arising from the previous meetings, specifically regarding notifications to delegations after they meet with the Board. It was stated that notifications are given to the organizations/groups that are represented as a delegation, if applicable, not necessarily to the specific person on the delegation.

Trustees then discussed attendance at the upcoming Public School Board Council (PSBC) meeting in February. Nominations for the Public School Boards’ Association awards are now open. The deadline for nominations is March 17.

The Board then reviewed Policy 5 - Role of the Board Chair and Policy 6-Role of the Vice-Chair.

Trustees approved the school calendar survey for the next two school years. The survey will be released once classes resume in January.

The Board received a delegation from Supervisor of Curriculum Julia Drefs and Lead Facilitator of Curriculum Darcy Kirkham. The team gave an update on the work being done in the division on curriculum delivery and a cohort assessment update. A second delegation was received consisting of the Indigenous Success Coaches and the Indigenous Success Lead. They described how their team is supporting the development of Indigenous content in the classroom, the divisional professional development learning series, how the Indigenous Success Coaches are working in the classroom with students and teaching staff, cultural arts and Cree literacy, growth of the HPSD land-based learning program, Youth Council for Reconciliation, community collaborations, and next steps along the journey.

The Board received and approved the Terms of Reference for the ad hoc Advocacy Committee.

Policy 3 - Role of the Trustee and its Appendix, Policy 4 - Trustee Code of Ethics and its Appendix received three readings and final approval.

Trustees reviewed and approved the 2018-2019 Annual Education Results Report and the 2019-2022 Three-Year Education Plan.

The action item to sponsor the Northwest Alberta Regional Skills Canada competition was tabled to the January meeting to confirm the number of HPSD students attending the competition.

The High Prairie and Area Traffic Safety Coalition requested the HPSD’ support in its endeavour to change the current school zones times in Slave Lake, High Prairie, and Big Lakes County from its current format to a full-day format of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Board approved a motion to send letters of support.

Approval in full was given to divisional trip to the Soaring Youth Conference in Ottawa. Approval in full was given to the Kinuso School field trip to Greece.

Trustees approved the Finance Report and then moved into closed for the remainder of the meeting.
